Can’t Open PNG Files? How to Fix the Error
PNG is a lossless data compression format widely used in web graphics. If you download an image from the Internet, it may be saved as a PNG file. But some Windows users say they can’t open the PNG files, so what happens to the image and how to fix the issue? Method 1: Repair or Reset Your Windows Photo Viewer
You can open an PNG image with the Windows Photo Viewer, Microsoft Paint and Adobe Photoshop. If the Can’t open PNG files error appears on the Windows device, try to repair the default photo checker by updating or resetting it.
Step 1: Press the Win + I keys to open Settings. Choose Apps > Apps & features.
Step 2: Find and choose the default image viewer such as Windows Photo Viewer or Photos. After that, click Advanced options. Then tap on Repair or Reset.
Method 2: Fix Corrupt Files with an Image Recovery Tool

Once the PNG image is encrypted by others, there is no way to access it unless you use the encryption key or change the file settings to decrypt the picture file.
Step 1: Right-click the PNG file and then choose Properties.
Step 2: Under the General tab, tap on Advanced. After that, unselect Encrypt contents to secure data. Then click OK.
Method 4: Convert the PNG File to Another Image Format
Maybe the default photo program doesn’t support the PNG format, so replace with another compatible photo viewer when encountering “cannot open PNG files.” Alternatively, convert to another format via online file converter.
Step 1: Right-click the image and choose Open with.
Step 2: Select an image checker. If there is no app you want to use, continue to click Choose another app.
Step 3: Choose the photo program and tick Always use this app to open .PNG files.
